History

The history of kandi starts in 90s rave culture. Ravers during this time were mostly teenagers or young adults who were looking for cheap and accessible ways to accessorize their raving outfits, and were drawn to the bright beads available in DIY bracelet kits for children.

Kandi culture was integrated into other scenes in the early 2000s, as the emo and scene subcultures became popular. Much like ravers in the 90s, emo and scene kids were teenagers that wanted to express themselves through their clothing.

Now, kandi culture isn't as prominent as it used to be. There are still lots of kandi kids online, but you won't see as many at raves, festivals or concerts. There has been a bit of a resurgence of kandi though, as fans of popular musicians like Taylor Swift have started to trade bracelets at shows!
